Willets are one of the harbingers of spring along the coast of Delaware. Returning each year from winters in eastern South America, they too take advantage of the protein found in Horseshoe Crab eggs.

When we think about shorebirds feasting on the thousands and thousands of Horseshoe Crab eggs laid on the shore of Delaware Bay each year, certain species come to mind. I’ll bet that few of you think about Boat-tailed Grackles, but here is one that can’t fit another egg into its mouth.
