At sunrise this morning Semipalmated Sandpipers feasted on eggs left on the beach by thousands of Horseshoe Crabs.

I don’t think I have ever seen one of these before, but I found this guy today and it cooperated for a portrait session.

Rails are part of the Rallidae family of birds. Other rails found in our marshes are King, Yellow, Black and Virginia. But the Clapper is heard so often with its call which I have seen described as a series of loud unmusical ticks. This one was ticking, or clapping, away on a sunny morning.

Clapper Rails are elusive birds, often heard but seldom seen in the marsh. This morning, however, a couple of rails scurried through the shallows as they went about their early morning routine.

It is interesting to watch the chasing games in the marsh, and to wonder why one bird seems to consistently be the aggressor. There is some poetry in the chase.

Not exactly the Time Warp dance from Rocky Horror, but a pretty nice jump to the right none the less. Notice the sideways heart shape that the water drops make in the bottom photo.
