A Change in the Weather

A cold front blasted through the Cape Region today bringing heavy rain and a sharp drop in temperature.  At 1:30 in Lewes it was 73 degrees out but in one hour it had dropped to 56.  Just when you Delaware coast locals thought that some spring weather had finally arrived nature dropped in the cold NW winds again.  Anyway, I loved the dramatic sky the front brought in as it approached Cape Henlopen.

Reflecting In Cambridge

Photographing through the window of a store front window in Cambridge MD recently an interesting reflection became part of the composition.  This was the scene as I saw it through the window glass.  A slightly surreal look at past, present and future at least as my mind’s eye sees it, as the empty store is planned for a new opportunity. Downtown Cambridge is sprouting new restaurants and stores all the time.  It’s a great place to visit.

Dewey First light

I caught the first rays of sunlight today on Dewey Beach.  A beautiful January morning on the beach with a tolerable temperature of 32, which is a bit warmer at sunrise  than it has been recently.

Icing Up

Days of well below freezing temperatures result in salt water creeks freezing up.  This is a sight rarely seen anymore.

Winter Is Here

It may not feel much like winter today on the Delaware coast but cold air is coming.  Clouds preceding that cold air slid in over the peninsula overnight but a sliver of clear sky on the eastern horizon allowed the rising sun to shine brightly on the bottoms of those clouds.  A boat heading east in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal added an interesting foreground element.

August Sunset

This sunset at Cape Henlopen was taken a couple of weeks ago but it took a rainy Saturday for me to get it posted.

Springing

The springing of Spring foreshadows the warm sunsets of summer and the return of well witnessed and ‘captured’ sunsets on Rehoboth Bay.  This view in Dewey will be seen again soon.

Winter Sculpting

Dunes Strata Cape H 3.9.2014_4498.BW

The winds of winter work on dunes as a sculpture might work on clay.  This dune at Cape Henlopen has been worked over during the winter leaving interesting strata exposed.

Winter Beach

Icy_Herring_Point_2.21.2015_1083_pam.tony

As a kid, not living near the coast, I wondered what the beach looked like in winter.  Did it get snow? Does the sand freeze? Does the ocean freeze?  The answer is yes to all three questions.  This year the beach has not experienced much of these conditions but last year was another story.  This photograph was taken at sunrise in February 2015 at Cape Henlopen State Park.  Perhaps we will see the beach covered with snow this year before spring arrives.
