This was the sunset last night on the sound at Buxton, North Carolina.

Brown Pelicans are seen quite commonly flying low near the shore in Delaware. During a recent kayak trip in Rehoboth Bay I found this group where they loaf the day away.

This Buttonbush blossom is very attractive to honey bees. One works the flower while the other hovers, waiting to land.

I visited the Royal Tern colony again last night. The chicks are getting bigger and they demand near constant feeding. Here are a few parents bringing in fish and landing in the the thick of the colony, wings fixed and landing gear extended.

Black Skimmers are a delight to watch as they work for food. They soar and skim the water’s surface with their mandible hoping a fish falls in. These two worked a local pond last night.

Last night I saw something I have never seen before. Just as the sun was setting a Great Blue Heron landed in the marsh just a little beyond my comfortable camera range. With distance and low light challenging my equipment and abilities, I shot the scene of the heron carrying an alive Marsh Hen chick. The heron took a few minutes to shake the chick to death and then struggled to swallow the large body. These photos document that event.

I kayaked out to a Laughing Gull nesting colony last evening in Rehoboth Bay, Delaware. It was a great night and I have several photographs to post over the next few days. This sequence, from top to bottom shows an adult Laughing Gull on a nest, two eggs in a nest, a just-born baby still with the egg tooth on the tip of its bill, and the last two show three recently born chicks with one practicing its calling.

Who doesn’t enjoy a green headed insect on a yellow flower. I wish I could tell you what this insect is, but my field guide does not include it. Any thoughts?

I never thought of bees rubbing their hands together in glee, but that is exactly what it looks like this bee is doing. With plenty of nectar in each of these blossoms, why not?
