The Delaware Bay beach was host to a variety of shorebirds tonight, feasting on horseshoe crab eggs. Red Knots, Semipalmated Plovers and Willets were the three most abundant species present.

I am in Connecticut this weekend and found this wildflower and fungus in the woods this afternoon. Can anybody tell me what the flower is?

It snowed this evening and I went out into the woods behind my house to light up the snow as it fell through the trees.

It is appropriate, I suppose, to post the last sunrise and sunset of the calendar year on New Years Eve. The sun rise was “sailors take warning”, red sky and calm wind. The front came through and the sunset was a “sailors delight”.

Earlier this fall I was able to watch a flock of Forster’s Terns work a school of bait fish just before sunset. Here is a two-photo sequence of one concentrating on its prey and then banking off of the headwind to swoop back around into position.

I watched this hawk this afternoon as he sat on a wire patiently watching for mice in the wheat field below him. A lunge, a catch and then time to enjoy. It doesn’t get much better than that if you’re a hawk. I watched him get three mice in about 15 minutes.

I went to one of my favorite sunset spots tonight, Cape Henlopen. I wasn’t disappointed.
The low, wet areas around Delaware are full of new Skunk Cabbage. The broad green leaves are a site as late afternoon sun spotlights them.
