We have bird feeders behind our house that attract (surprise, surprise) Eastern Gray Squirrels during the day. Here one stops between mouthfuls to scratch at an incredible speed. What may be a real surprise is that after the sun goes down and the Gray Squirrels bed down for the night, Southern Flying Squirrels visit the same feeders. They are quick and very difficult to photograph in action, but I caught one last night as he prepared to leap from the tree to the feeder. I’ll work on photgraphing one flying and will post it as soon as I succeed.

My friend, renowned photographer Kevin Fleming, and I went out at both sunrise and sunset on the day before Christmas and were richly rewarded for our efforts. The full moon setting started the day, followed by an early morning Heron siting. What appeared to be nothing more than a yawn (if Herons actually do such a thing) preceded his jump to a more distant location. In the afternoon I found an Eagle before I joined up with Kevin, and then we both captured a beautiful sunset. It was a memorable Christmas Eve.

The weather has been overcast with intermittent rain most of the week. It was nice to get back out to Primehook Refuge to catch some of the waterfowl in a nice sunset tonight. The mallards keep moving their location, pothole to pothole, but I have found a place where a small group of Hooded Mergansers seem to have found a home. Back out tomorrow morning early for sunrise before the northeaster moves in later in the day.
