Killdeer have returned to coastal Delaware recently, and they are getting ready to lay eggs. They seek open sand or gravel areas for their ground nests and can be seen in unlikely places like parking lots. These two stood still long enough for a close look.

Sanderlings dominated the landscape at the beach this afternoon. They are fascinating to watch and difficult to photograph with their skittish actions. Today they were just a little subdued and I was able to catch them in the late afternoon light.

The shorebirds were doing quite well cleaning Blue Mussels off of the rocks at the beach this afternoon. Eating and napping on a sunny beach is appealling to many, many species. I’ll wait until it’s a little warmer.
