Snake in the Grass

May 30, 2009

I encountered a real snake in the grass today, literally. This guy let me get right up into his face for a portrait. I tried to identify the species but was unable to find a close enough match in the book I have. Can anybody help me with an identification? Thanks.

Looks like an Eastern Pine Snake – non-venomous. We found one today in our garden in Rehoboth Beach.

It’s the very common garter snake. By the blades of grass in your pic I can tell this was a smaller snake and I just did on-line research that states that the Eastern Pine is fairly large. Also, found a photo that looks almost identical to yours on the garter snake site. Check it out. They are very easy going snakes which explains how you were able to get this pic. 🙂
