Sweet corn is one of six major types of maize, according to Wikipedia. Maize was first domesticated from a wild plant over 10,000 years ago in what is now southern Mexico. All we really know is that farmers on Delmarva produce some of the best eating corn around, and the season is not over. This morning I photographed sweet corn being picked on Ficner’s Farm near Leipsic. I met Mrs. Ficner last Saturday at the Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market. She let me come up to shoot corn picking which starts before sunrise. I really enjoyed the experience of being in the field as hand picking was underway. Watch out for flying ears! This is part of my ongoing work of photographing where our food comes from on Delmarva. I am meeting the nicest people, and seeing delicious food long before it gets to market.
