Chicken Chickens

October 8, 2021

Merriam Webster defines the word ‘chicken’ as both a domestic fowl and a coward.  I am working on a photography assignment about our food sources and my friend, Jim Perdue, has connected me with some Perdue Farms’ organic chicken growers.  In warmer months, spring to fall, chicken house doors are open to let the birds venture out into a pasture.  I visited this chicken house at Cedar Knoll Farm, near Harrington to, hopefully, witness this grand enjoyment of the great outdoors. Well, the farm owner told me, you should have seen the last flock we raised, they loved being outside.  This morning out of two large chicken houses not a single bird went out for fresh air and sunshine.  Doors were open but they were chicken.  You decide which use of the word applies.  Yes, you’re right, both. Here are the non-adventurers content to stay in today.
