Heron Dinner, Marsh Hen Loss

July 9, 2009

Last night I saw something I have never seen before. Just as the sun was setting a Great Blue Heron landed in the marsh just a little beyond my comfortable camera range. With distance and low light challenging my equipment and abilities, I shot the scene of the heron carrying an alive Marsh Hen chick. The heron took a few minutes to shake the chick to death and then struggled to swallow the large body. These photos document that event.
