Short-billed Dowitcher

Short-billed Dowitchers were working the edge of the marsh last night near the open water where the egrets and terns were fishing.  They are colored to blend into the grasses where they hunt.  These did me the favor of stepping out of the cover to pose for a photo.

    You might be interested to check out the recent map we created to look at some of the factors that may impact Short-billed Dowitcher’s future prospects on the breeding grounds. We overlayed Short-billed Dowitcher breeding range with a map of mining activity and current protected areas–quite an eye opener especially for the middle-of-the-continent hendersoni subspecies.
