The Decisive Moment

March 9, 2024

My teenage years were when I began to get more deeply interested in photography.  I began to read articles and books that addressed photographer’s visions and techniques.  An observation that resonated with me then and has not diminished over time is the term the “decisive moment”.   Photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is attributed with having coined the term.  The fuller quote is “Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera.”   I love taking a camera into the surf (in waterproof housing of course) and shooting that split second when a wave breaks.  Something like this.  Frozen energy, a beautiful natural form, a moment that passes ever so quickly frozen to allow a longer look, and suspense about how the next second or two played out.
