Loons, the iconic bird of northern summer lakes, winter along the Mid-Atlantic coast, changing their fresh water fish diet to salt water species. Their winter plumage is very different from their far more striking summer markings. I happened to catch this one as it was feeding, coming up for a breath of air for a few seconds then back down to find the next bite.
